Hey everyone, I'm Bea. Welcome back to Read and Roam, the channel where we explore text and how it fits into our lives. am so excited to show you this email got. Check it out. Hi Bea, my name is Ranger Avery and work for the park service. We're redoing the visitor center of your local nature park and are hoping to feature the writing of some members of the community. I'm big fan of your videos and thought you'd be perfect fit for this project. Do you think you could help us out by contributing an informational paragraph on biome of your choice? If you're interested, I've attached some more details to this email. I'm looking forward to your response. Best, Ranger Avery. this is such cool opportunity to help out the community and my channel. While I'm working on my writing, can teach you how to write an informational paragraph, too. Ranger Avery said need to write about biome, which is community of plants and animals living together, like desert or forest. You can even choose your own biome to write about. Let's get this writing party started. feel like we're really set up for success with this project. You've already learned so much about informational texts and seen some great examples of informational paragraphs. Just like other informational texts, informational paragraphs are meant to teach the reader about certain topic. paragraph is usually around three to five sentences, while an informational article or book could be much longer. Before we start writing paragraph, you need to know how most informational paragraphs are organized. For our writing, we'll be focusing on the most common paragraph structure. Structure is how something is built. In this case, how the sentences in the paragraph are arranged. Let's check out text, and I'll show you what mean. Giraffes have many special adaptations. They have long necks that help them reach leaves high up in trees. Giraffes also have long legs that help them run quickly to escape predators. Their spotted patterns help them blend in with the tall grasses. These special features help giraffes survive. Notice how we can find the main idea in this first sentence. The first sentence of an informational paragraph is called topic sentence, and it's like the stated main idea of the paragraph. The topic sentence lets your readers know what topic they're going to read about and in general what you're going to tell them. From this sentence, we learned that the topic of this text is giraffes and that the author will be telling us about their adaptations. Next, let's take look at this section. Do you recognize what types of details these are? They are supporting details. We need these facts and definitions to learn more about the topic. That's why the supporting details come after the topic sentence. Let's look at what's left. This is called the closing sentence. What do you think the purpose of this sentence is? Just like it says in its name, the closing sentence closes off the end of your work by briefly reminding your reader what they learned. This is usually restated version of the topic sentence. You don't just write the topic sentence again, though. It's like you paraphrase it. In this paragraph, the closing sentence reminded us that giraffes have special features that help them survive. This echoes the topic sentence that introduced the idea of giraffes having adaptations. Let's practice finding these parts in new informational paragraph. We'll read it together, then you'll label the parts of it. Lunar New Year is holiday celebrated in many Asian countries. It marks the beginning of new year based on the moon's calendar. Families often clean their homes to sweep away bad luck and make room for good luck. People celebrate with fireworks, special foods, and red decorations. Lunar New Year is recognized in many ways to welcome new year and honor Asian culture. All right, pause the video here to label the topic sentence, supporting details, and closing sentence. To show the group of supporting details, you can use bracket like we did before, which looks like this. How'd you do? The first sentence of the paragraph is the topic sentence. The next three sentences are the supporting details that explain more about the Lunar New Year. The last sentence is the closing sentence. Now that you're more familiar with the structure of an informational paragraph, think it's time we look at some more details that Ranger Avery sent in the email. The visitor center needs reports on four different biomes. The Arctic tundra, desert, rainforest, and ocean. Here's some info about each of them. The Arctic tundra is known for its cold temperatures and snowy weather. Deserts are characterized by their dry, sandy nature, lack of rain, and interesting creatures. Rainforests are teeming with life and towering trees and are known for their wet weather. And oceans are underwater biomes that feature colorful animal and plant life that thrive in the salty water. Whoa, those are some great options. When choosing topic, you want to choose one that you like and are interested in. You could choose one that you're already an expert on or one that you want to learn about. Since I'm already pretty familiar with the other three and want to step out of my comfort zone, I'm going to write about the Arctic Tundra. That leaves any of the other three options for you to choose. To review the topics and make your choice, check out your lesson materials. So today, we learned that informational paragraphs are written following certain structure. The topic sentence goes first, then the supporting details, and last, the closing sentence. After you choose your topic, we'll dive into writing our topic sentences. can't wait to work on this project with you. Until then, remember, where there are words, there's world to explore.
