Welcome to the Lutheran Lexicon podcast from Confident Faith. am Corey Möller, contributor here at Confident Faith, and will be your reader today. This Holy Trinity, the 31st of May, in the year of our Lord 2026, in the time of the church. Our readings for today are Genesis, starting with chapter 1, verse 1, and reading through chapter 2, verse 4a. Psalm 8. Acts chapter 2, verses 14a and 22 through 36. And Matthew chapter 28, verses 16 through 20. We will close, as always, with the Lord's Prayer. Today's first reading comes from the book of Genesis, and we will be reading from verse 1 of the first chapter through verse 4a of the second chapter. In the beginning, God made the heaven and the earth. Yet the earth was invisible and unformed, and darkness was over the abyss. And divine wind was being carried along over the water. And God said, "Let light come into being." And light came into being. And God saw the light that it was good. And God separated between the light and the darkness. And God called the light day, and the darkness he called night. And it came to be evening, and it came to be morning, day one. And God said, "Let firmament come into being in the midst of the water, and let it be separator between water and water." And it became so. And God made the firmament. And God separated between the water that was under the firmament and the water that was above the firmament. And God called the firmament sky. And God saw that it was good. And it came to be evening, and it came to be morning, second day. And God said, "Let the water that is under the sky be gathered into one gathering, and let the dry land appear." And it became so. And the water that was under the sky was gathered into their gatherings, and the dry land appeared. And God called the dry land Earth, and the systems of the waters he called seas. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, "Let the Earth put forth pasture land vegetation, seed propagating according to kind and according to likeness, and fruit bearing tree producing fruit, of which the seed is in it according to kind on the Earth." And it became so. And the Earth brought forth pasture land vegetation, seed propagating according to kind and according to likeness. And fruit bearing tree producing fruit, of which the seed is in it according to kind on the Earth. And God saw that it was good. And it came to be evening, and it came to be morning, third day. And God said, "Let luminaries come into being in the firmament of the sky for illumination of the Earth, to separate between the day and the night, and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and for years. And let them be for illumination in the firmament of the sky, so as to give light upon the earth. And it became so. And God made the two great luminaries, the great luminary for rulership of the day, and the lesser luminary for rulership of the night, and the stars. And God set them in the firmament of the sky, so as to give light upon the earth, and to rule the day and the night, and to separate between the light and the darkness. And God saw that it was good. And it came to be evening, and it came to be morning of fourth day. And God said, "Let the waters bring forth creeping things among living creatures, and birds flying on the earth against the firmament of the sky." And it became so. And God made the great sea monsters and every creature among creeping animals, which the waters brought forth according to their kinds. And every winged bird according to kind. And God saw that they were good. And God blessed them saying, "Increase and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth." And it came to be evening, and it came to be morning of fifth day. And God said, "Let the earth bring forth the living creature according to kind, quadrupeds and creeping things and wild animals of the earth according to kind." And it became so. And God made the wild animals of the earth according to kind, and the cattle according to kind, and all the creeping things of the earth according to their kind. And God saw that they were good. Then God said, "Let us make mankind according to our image and according to likeness. And let them rule the fish of the sea, and the birds of the sky, and the cattle and all the earth, and all the creeping things that creep upon the earth." And God made mankind according to divine image he made him. Male and female he made them. And God blessed them saying, "Increase and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and rule the fish of the sea, and the birds of the sky, and all the cattle and all the earth, and all the creeping things that creep upon the earth." And God said, "See, have given to you all sowable herbage, propagating seed that is atop the whole earth, and every tree that has in itself fruit of sowable seed, you shall have it for food. And to all the wild animals of the earth, and to all the birds of the sky, and to every creeping thing that creeps on the earth that has in itself the animating force of life, even all green herbage for food." And it became so. And God saw all the things that he had made, and see, they were exceedingly good. And it came to be evening, and it came to be morning, sixth day. And the heaven and the earth were finished and all their arrangement. And on the sixth day, God finished his works that he had made. And he left off on the seventh day from all his works that he had made. And God blessed the seventh day and hallowed it because on it he left off from all his works that God had begun to make. This is the book of the origin of heaven and earth. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Today's reading from the Psalter is the eighth Psalm. Lord, our Lord, how admirable is your name in all the earth because your magnificence was raised beyond the heavens. Out of mouths of infants and nurslings, you furnished praise for yourself for the sake of your enemies to put down enemy and avenger because will observe the heavens, works of your fingers, moon and stars, things you alone founded. What is man that you are mindful of him or son of man that you attend to him? You diminished him little in comparison with angels. With glory and honor you crowned him. And you set him over the works of your hands. You subjected all under his feet. Sheep and cattle all together, and further the beasts of the plain, the birds of the air and the fish of the sea, the things that pass through paths of seas. Lord, our Lord, how admirable is your name in all the earth. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forevermore. Amen. Today's Epistle reading comes from the Book of Acts, and we will be reading the second chapter, verses 14A and 22 through 36. But Peter, standing with the 11, lifted up his voice and addressed them. Men of Israel, hear these words. Jesus of Nazareth, man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know. This Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it. For David says concerning him, saw the Lord always before me, for he is at my right hand that may not be shaken. Therefore, my heart was glad and my tongue rejoiced. My flesh also will dwell in hope, for you will not abandon my soul to Hades or let your holy one see corruption. You have made known to me the paths of life. You will make me full of gladness with your presence. Brothers, may say to you confidence about the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. Being therefore prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne, he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing. For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says, "The Lord said to my Lord, sit at my right hand until make your enemies your footstool." Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Today's Gospel reading comes from the book of Matthew, and we will be reading the 28th chapter, verses 16 through 20. Now the 11 disciples went to Galilee to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. And when they saw him, they worshipped him, but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that have commanded you. And behold, am with you always to the end of the age." This is the Gospel of the Lord. Thanks be to God. now invite all of you to join me in reciting the Lord's Prayer, one of the most ancient prayers of the church. do encourage you to say it aloud if you are somewhere it would be reasonable to do so, but praying it silently is, of course, also fine. The Lord knows what is in your heart. Lord, remember us in your kingdom and teach us to pray. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. Go in peace and grace to serve our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in whatever calling has been given you or tasks set before you. Until next week, God be with you.
