Kilograms and Grams Converting kg to g and Converting g to kg Math with Mr J

welcome to math with mr in this video i'm going to cover how to convert between kilograms and grams so kilograms to grams and then grams to kilograms now one thing to keep in mind one kilogram equals one thousand grams we need this information in order to convert let's jump into number one where we have nine kilograms equals how many grams well each of those kilograms is one thousand grams so we have one thousand grams one thousand grams one thousand grams nine times in other words nine times one thousand nine times one thousand equals nine thousand so nine kilograms equals nine thousand grams when we go from kilograms to grams we multiply by one thousand let's move on to number two where we have 61 and 44 hundredths or 61.44 kilograms equals how many grams now this number is not as easy to work with as the nine kilograms in number one we were able to use mental math for number one in order to multiply by one thousand for number two we're still going from kilograms to grams so we need to multiply by one thousand when we multiply something by one thousand we can actually make this really simple all we need to do is move the decimal three times to the right when we multiply something by one thousand each digit of that number shifts three places to the left the value of the number increases by one thousand in other words we multiply by one thousand so technically the digits shift or move and increase in value but let's make this simple and move the decimal in order to push all of our digits to the correct places so to speak so again move the decimal three times to the right to multiply by one thousand so let me rewrite 61 and 44 hundredths here and we'll move the decimal once twice and three times to the right fill that gap with the zero and that's our answer so we have 61 grams so 61.44 kilograms equals 61 440 grams let's move back up to number one and see if we still get 9000 when we move the decimal three times to the right for that one so let me rewrite nine and our decimal always comes after whole number so we'll move it once twice and three times to the right fill these gaps with zeros and we get 9000 that way as well to recap when we go from kilograms to grams we multiply by 1000 and we can do that by moving the decimal three times to the right let's move on to number three where we have four thousand grams equals how many kilograms well each group of 1000 grams equals kilogram so we need to think how many groups of 1000 are in 4 000 meaning 4 000 divided by thousand that's going to be four four thousand grams equals four kilograms so when we go from grams to kilograms we divide by one thousand let's move on to number four where we have fifty four thousand three hundred twenty grams equals how many kilograms so grams two kilograms divide by one thousand now this number isn't as easy to work with as the four thousand in number three so what we're going to do when we divide by one thousand we're going to move the decimal three times to the left we push each digit three places to the right when we divide by one thousand this gives us one one thousandth the value of our original number meaning we divided by one thousand so we can do this by again moving the decimal three times to the left so i'm going to rewrite decimal goes at the end of whole number and let's move it once twice and three times to the left so the decimal is going to go in between the four and the three and we get 54 and 32 hundredths or 54.32 now am leaving this zero off because zeros to the right of decimal do not change the value of that decimal so typically we leave them off because they are not needed now if you were to write that 0 it would still be correct that's an equivalent decimal but again typically we leave them off because they do not change the value so 54 320 grams equals 54.32 kilograms so there you have it there's how to convert between kilograms and grams when we go from kilograms to grams we multiply by 1000 and we can do that by moving the decimal three times to the right when we go from grams to kilograms we divide by 1000 and we can do that by moving the decimal three times to the left hope that helped thanks so much for watching until next time peace you
