Hello and welcome to Steps in Problem Solving. In this video you will learn steps you can follow steps for solving any type of math word problem. There are 4 main steps to solving math word problem. 1. Understand the problem. 2. Make plan. 3. Carry out the plan. 4. Check your answer. Let's look at each one separately. When you read word problem, it's important that you understand it before you try to solve it. It might seem obvious, but if you start working on problem before you fully understand what you're looking for, you'll get frustrated, and want to give up. To understand word problem, read it carefully once, then read it again, looking for important clues like key words, important numbers, and of course the question the problem asks. like to underline or highlight important information. "Alex is 1 year younger than Max. Josie is 8. Suzie is 1 year older than Josie and 2 years younger than Max. How old is Max?" Then to be sure you fully understand it, reread the problem third time. Before you tackle the problem, be sure you have understood the question very well. Once you've understood the problem, it's time to make plan to solve it. First, you will choose one of the several problem solving strategies. To learn some problem solving strategies from our site, watch the videos labeled, "Problem Solving Strategies." Once you have chosen an appropriate strategy, reread the question and ask yourself if you'll need to add, subtract, multiply, divide, or combination of these. In Problem Solving Strategy Video 1, Look for Clues and Key Words, you'll find list of clues to help you know which operations to use. Now that you have plan, you can work out the word problem. You can use notebook or scrap paper to solve the problem. It's ok if it gets messy, or if you have to start over few times. That's what problem solving is all about. Just don't give up. Whenever you get stuck carrying out the plan, remember to always go back and reread the problem. And, the final step to solving any word problem is to check your answer. Go back to the problem and see if your answer makes since. Is it reasonable? If it is, great. If it is not, you'll have to go back to step 1, to make sure that you've understood the problem correctly. Then, check that you've calculated correctly.
