peace and hello and welcome to another lesson this time in arabic grammar we're going to be discussing what constitutes noun verb and particle and telling apart nominal and verbal sentence and why is it important to know the difference between both let's dive in any word in arabic kalima is word any word in arabic could either be one of three ism so noun verb or particle however pay attention when we mention noun in arabic it includes additional stuff and like in english so noun could be the name of something or someone or place for example in english so rajoul is man tiger hitab book day and when we say for example ibrahim the name of person dubai the name of place also pronouns such as in arabic adjectives as well constitute what we call noun such as jamil beautiful so also adjectives are nouns also active and passive participles so for example active participants so someone who is sitting am going to the mosque in the masculine the him is actually not verb in english would say am going but in arabic it's literally noun i'm goa so i'm someone who's going to the masjid so it's different in arabic we also have adjectives as mentioned we have demonstratives like this that and so on hada they also fall under this category and lavi election relative pronouns which means this which is or that or he who and also adverbials of time and place fall under noun in arabic so for example when say the book is under the table is name or noun in arabic isn't so it's the name of place on top of or above amam in front of yama on the day that for example prayed on the day of friday so yama in this case is an adverbial of time the name literally of name of time telling us about the timing of something with that's an adverbial also went out with my husband so in this case it's an adverbial and it's is in arabic it's noun in english you would say have car but in arabic we use the adverbial at literally at mine is card so it's important to know what falls under the category of noun so one more time it could be the name of something person or place it could be pronoun like ana and it could be demonstrative like it could be relative pronoun like levy and leti and it could also include adverbials of time and place and which is different in english and as well it could include adjectives active and passive participants so it includes lot of things fail that should be straightforward and easy verb generally speaking in arabic we have the past present and future for example akala in the past tense he ate that means that means he eats or is eating because we don't have continuous tense in arabic we use one form to refer to either that's in the imperative and some scholars argue that there's actually only two tenses which are the past and the present because you derive the imperative from the present tense in arabic so but generally speaking to make it easy is the past present and imperative the future tense is formed by adding salva prefix so can say you will eat you will eat is particle such as prepositions articles prefixes conjunctions and others for example when we use which means all so pay attention because in english prepositions are different but in arabic we have and we have adverbials so is not the same as this category over here so what could tell us something is noun is verb or particle really easy and the definite article just as in english you say the book al-kitab and just as in english you would say book in the indefinite case book or an apple when you have vowel in arabic we don't have an indefinite article so we use tanween which is the double dhamma double fatha double kasra depending on the grammatical case so can say kitaban depending on the grammatical case of the noun and it could come after particle noun can come after particle for example so after fee also noun can come after the vocative particle yeah for example and so on although can't say to proper name like can't say al muhammad that would be wrong but we can add can we into certain names like for example muhammadan so depending on the grammatical case some names will take tenuyn and the vocative particle and we mentioned they could come after asia particle and another sign is the round tau which is strong sign of femininity in arabic for example when we say lima that indicates that that's noun in arabic i'll find the verb signs of the verb pad the particle pad which comes before the verb and that's going to be in separate video i'm not going to go into detail now but for with example present tense that means might eat did indeed eat so when we have pad before word it's verb and we mentioned earlier which indicate the future so we know that this word is actually pronoun that means that's verb when we're addressing the feminine in the imperative drink and what constitutes particle in arabic and health is basically whatever is not name or verb and whatever that whatever doesn't have meaning on its own so if just say fee that doesn't make any sense if it's not within sentence and categorize the names or the nouns verbs and particles so you can pause the screen and then we're gonna go to the answers together so pause this screen do this exercise on your own word for word try your best and then come back and check the answers so i've put the nouns here in blue the verbs in red and the particles in yellow ahmad is running in the street ahmed is proper name that's verb he's running fee is particle we know from the alif lam it's noun yes they are swimming the children in the sea yes over here that's verb we know from the alif lam that's that's noun fee particle of again another noun we know from the alif now with these verbs there's it might not be obvious to non-native speaker but obviously when you're at an intermediate level you you're able to tell what's verb or not to certain extent by the prefixes and suffixes and from the context of the sentence pay attention over here that's noun why it's not verb because an active participle it's not yanamu it's noun an active participle so you can see over here this part is the verb we have the pronoun over here so i've put it in blue wrote so the is actually the pair over here and this part is the verb so verb and attached pronoun suffix subject pronoun suffix with the black pen is particle of gel little column we know from the alif lam and it came after particle of gel so that's noun unless what you know from the elephant and obviously it's color adjective so adjectives also fall on the nouns or names this copybook or notebook is for him that's the literal translation hava demonstrative so over here that's particle of zhang so so over here that's an object pronoun so that's ism as well so this is how we dissecting the sentence in arabic yes the teacher answered literally two the classroom so straightforward over here you can tell that this is job article i'm pleased with that with this literally so anna proper pronoun i'm happy and you can tell that from the tanween it's an adjective and from the mean it's sm noun nouns why because so the definite article and adverbial of place which means these dresses are for her so hair the demonstratives go under nouns dresses we can tell from the elephant the lamb is half is the preposition of jean and the hair is for hair so her hair dresses is for her so this is actually suffix pronoun went out to the cinema so the first part is the verb second part over here is the subject pronoun the attached subject pronoun so the particle the particle indicating the future the prefix indicating the future is so be that's going to be on its own i'm going to give you few seconds to think about it pause the video if i'm going too quick let's look at the answers so the is particle of germ we don't have any verb we have the which is particle object so in the name of god bismillah okay allah over here the most compassionate the most merciful so adjectives allah the name of god it came after the particle of the okay even harder one so seek refuge in allah from satan the outcast so that's let's categorize pay attention to the particles and what constitutes verb and the signs of name or noun okay so if we do it together that's verb that's particle object and it came after and you can as well types of sentences in arabic so we have what we call useful sentence or meaningful sentence normally made up of two plus words sometimes one word in arabic has everything that you need but generally speaking that means prepositional phrase just as in english when when you say at the door and albert so on so when it comes to meaningful sentence like full sentence we have two types nominal sentence and verbal sentence so nominal sentence joomla verbal sentence what do we mean by that and why do you even need to know that okay so will come back to this but first let me show you so arabic is what we call vso language so some languages have this type of word order or structure where sentences can can start with verb followed by the subject or the thing or person that did the verb and followed by the object which received the verb so unlike in english in arabic you can say he wrote the book the lesson so that doesn't happen in english because english is subject verb object language for arabic spanish tagalog hawaiian some celtic languages like irish scottish welsh and gaelic they have that type of order so in arabic you can have vso or you can have svo sentence so you can say catabal or you can say so it goes both ways so that's why it's important that we are aware of that because we have two ways of basically saying sentence in arabic let's look at the examples prepositional phrase it doesn't have meaning on its own it's not complete sentence for example fill bait in the house complete so literally there's hidden pronoun so it's one word but it has meaning stop so it's one word but it's actually one sentence and as we mentioned meaningful sentence can either be verbal or normal so it could start with verb could be two words three words it could be nominal sentence starting with noun okay challenge for you and again take your time pause the screen and then we're gonna check the answers together so let me know if what kind of sentence is this one and this one so from the holy book of the quran and the next sentence allah who summoned what kind of sentences are these and why think why obviously had was somewhat so it started with noun that's nominal sentence when done okay so so challenge for you now so read the following sentences and distinguish which ones are verbal and which ones are nominal so the same sentences that we worked on earlier and we were trying to this literally dissect them now that you have an idea what's where's the verb was the noun what are the signs that tell me you can let me know now which one is verbal sentence i.e it starts with verb and which one is nominal sentence it starts with noun pause the screen take your time and let me know your answers the answers so the verbal sentences are in red the nominal sentences are in blue nominal sentence why because it starts with noun proper name or proper noun yes verbal sentence started with verb yes nominal sentence can you tell me why it started with name nominal sentence started with noun it started with verb verbal sentence started with verb over here the sentence started with verb pronoun so it started with pronoun it's nominal sentence started with with al-qura so it's nominal sentence he demonstrated so it's noun so the sentence started with noun so all verbal sentences over here started with verbs foreign
