trick to master periodic trends in less than minute. will teach you my personal trick which you will not find anywhere. At the end of this lecture, will use this trick to solve questions. Before teaching the trick, you must learn this important point. We know that atom is like sphere. Different atoms in the periodic table have different sizes. and noted down this important point for this trick. Now let me teach you the super easy trick. teach my students to keep your hands like this tight fist and loose open hand. The left hand are the tight fist is in the horizontal direction. So it reminds me the periods of the periodic table. Secondly, write atomic size. This reminds me to write shielding effect after atomic size. Then write electron affinity, electro negativity and ionization energy. Now listen carefully. The tight fist means atoms are tightly arranged across the periods. Let me repeat it. The tight fist means atoms are tightly arranged across the periods. Hence we say that atomic size of atoms decreases across the periods. The remaining three trends electron affinity, electro negativity and ionization energy go against atomic size. mean these three trends increases across the periods. What about shielding effect? Well, this is common in both atomic size and shielding effect. So they are brothers. Although atomic size decreases but shielding effect remains constant across the periods. On the other hand, this loose open hand points and downward or vertical direction. So it reminds me the groups of the periodic table. As usual write atomic size, shielding effect, electron affinity, electro negativity and ionization energy. Now listen carefully. The loose open hand means atoms are loosely arranged down the groups. Let me repeat it. The loose open hand means atoms are loosely arranged down the groups. Hence we say that atomic size increases down the groups. As usual, the remaining three trends electron affinity, electro negativity and ionization energy go against atomic size. mean these three trends decreases down the groups. What about shielding effect? We know that they are brothers. When atomic size increases down the groups, shielding effect also increases down the group. Hence this is the super easy trick to memorize periodic trends in less than minute. Now will teach you to crack periodic trends questions of exam. For example consider this question. The correct order of the atomic radi of carbon, cium, aluminium and silicon is given as well. It is very tricky question and students will spend lot of time while solving it. But will teach you the right strategy to solve such type of questions in very short period of time. write cium which is present in the bottom of the first group. The aluminium is present in the third group. Carbon is present in the fourth group above the aluminium while sulfur is present in the sixth group. Remember that both aluminium and sulfur are present in the third period. Now according to my personal trick atomic size or atomic radi increases down the group while atomic size or atomic radi decreases across the period. Sium is below the group among the four elements. So it has largest size. Secondly, both aluminium and sulfur are present in the same period. We know that size decreases in the period. Hence, aluminium has more atomic radi than sulfur. The carbon is above the three elements. Hence, it has smallest size. Thus the correct option is Now consider the second question. The electro negativity of the following elements increases in the order. Well, we know that carbon and silicon are both present in the fourth group while nitrogen and phosphorus are present in the fifth group. According to my personal trick, electro negativity increases across the periods while it decreases down the groups. Hence, we say that nitrogen is more electrogative than carbon. Phosphorus is down in the group and carbon is above in the group. Hence, carbon is more electrogative than phosphorus. Lastly, phosphorus is at the right side of the period than silicon. Hence, phosphorus is more electrogative than silicon. This is the correct order of increasing electro negativity. Thus, the correct option is Therefore, using this super easy trait, we can easily crack any question of periodic trends.
